Layout and Positioning
Before you buy anything, shop your home and move pieces around. Place your largest seating first, ideally facing a window or the room’s main feature to anchor the space. In a small living room, float the sofa slightly off the wall and tuck a slim console or shelf behind it for hidden storage.

Focal Points
A single, clear focal point stops the eye from wandering and makes the room feel intentional. If you don’t have a fireplace or built-in feature, create one with a low media unit, a thrifted console, or even a painted accent rectangle behind the sofa. 
Hang one oversized print, a framed fabric remnant, or a DIY abstract canvas above it to ground the view. Style the surface with just three items—a lamp, a stack of books, and one sculptural object—to keep the look composed and budget-friendly.
Lighting
Layered lighting costs very little but changes everything. Aim for three levels of light: overhead, mid-level, and low. Replace harsh white bulbs with warm, soft ones for an instantly gentler atmosphere. Add a simple floor lamp beside the sofa, plus a small table lamp or clip-on light near your favorite chair. 
In the evenings, rely mostly on these side lights to create a cocooning glow, and use inexpensive paper or fabric shades to soften the brightness.
Greenery
Even a tiny plant helps your living room feel more alive and finished. Choose low-maintenance options like pothos, snake plants, or a single leafy cutting in a glass jar if you are new to plant care. 
Place greenery near the edges of the room—on a side table, windowsill, or stool—to pull the eye outward and make the space feel wider. If natural light is limited, mix one or two quality faux plants with real branches or eucalyptus in a thrifted vase.
